Predicting spatially heterogeneous invasive spread: Pyracantha angustifolia invading a dry Andean valley in northern Argentina

چکیده

Abstract Understanding the drivers of invasive species spread is key to designing optimal management programmes for controlling them. Population models, parameterized from demographic and dispersal data, are useful simulating invasion when long-term observations lacking, which particularly important invasions occurring rapidly. We aimed understand how Pyracantha angustifolia (an ornamental shrub) influenced by heterogeneity in local conditions within a dry inter-montane valley northwestern Argentina that currently experiencing rapid urban expansion concomitant reduction cattle farming. Field surveys demonstrated individuals growing shrublands have higher fecundity than those grassland rocky habitats. Furthermore, grazing pressure horses substantially reduces impacts relationship between age fecundity. incorporated our field-estimated habitat age-specific fecundities into both analytical integro-difference equation models individual-based predict rates across each type presence or absence pressure. Results indicate rate would be (by up 33%) highlight can, through direct consumption seeds livestock, depress 53%). These results suggest shrubland areas most vulnerable may help reduce impact Pyracantha. This suggests synergism domestic livestock density contributes an this environment.

Predicting Argentine ant spread over the heterogeneous landscape using a spatially explicit stochastic model.

The characteristics of spread for an invasive species should influence how environmental authorities or government agencies respond to an initial incursion. High-resolution predictions of how, where, and the speed at which a newly established invasive population will spread across the surrounding heterogeneous landscape can greatly assist appropriate and timely risk assessments and control deci...

Modelling the spread of Wolbachia in spatially heterogeneous environments

The endosymbiont Wolbachia infects a large number of insect species and is capable of rapid spread when introduced into a novel host population. The bacteria spread by manipulating their hosts' reproduction, and their dynamics are influenced by the demographic structure of the host population and patterns of contact between individuals. Reaction-diffusion models of the spatial spread of Wolbach...

Designing spatially heterogeneous strategies for control of virus spread.

The spread of a virus--whether in a human population, computer network or cell-to-cell--is closely tied to the spatial (graph) topology of the interactions among the possible infectives. The authors study the problem of allocating limited control resources (e.g. quarantine or recovery resources) in these networks in a way that exploits the topological structure, so as to maximise the speed at w...

Competition in a spatially heterogeneous environment: modelling the risk of spread of a genetically engineered population.

In recent years regulations have been developed to address the risks of releasing genetically engineered organisms into the natural environment. These risks are generally considered to be proportional to the exposure multiplied by the hazard. Exposure is, in part, determined by the spatial spread of the organisms, a component of risk suited to mathematical analysis. In this paper we exampine a ...
